How to give someone emergency access to your documents

On Family, you choose one or more trusted people from your household. They ask from their own account, and you get an email. You can cancel any request, block someone who keeps asking, require several people to ask, and set the waiting time. If you haven’t cancelled when it runs out, they can open your ordinary documents, never the Vault.

  1. 01 / Choose

    Pick the people you trust.

Choose one or more people in your Family household. Being chosen opens nothing on its own.

Once the time is up, they open your ordinary documents from their own account. The Vault is never included.

Not sure which papers they would need? The life file checklist sets out what to keep for the people you choose.

Your rules

You stay in charge of every request.

Travelling, or somewhere without signal? Set the rules before you go.

  • Cancel any request.

Cancel before the waiting time ends and nothing opens, however many people asked.

  • Require more than one person to ask.

For an elderly parent, require two or three of the children to all request before access opens.

  • Block someone who keeps asking.

If one person keeps requesting, block them from asking again.

On Family

Membership alone opens nothing.

  • The payer invites up to four other people, each with their own account.
  • Every occupied seat is billed. Empty seats are not.
  • Joining never transfers ownership of a record.
  • Paying for a seat does not open another member’s private records.

No. Emergency access is not a will, a power of attorney or an executorship. It gives nobody authority over an estate. If you keep a will, the people you choose can see and its reference scan, on the rules you set.
Choose them as trusted people on Family now, before you need them. When they need your papers, they ask from their own accounts and you are told. If you haven’t cancelled by the end of the waiting time you set, they can open your ordinary documents.
Yes. The people you choose are members of your Family household, each with their own account. They never use your login. The payer invites up to four other people, and every occupied seat is billed.
No. Emergency access reaches ordinary documents only. Set up Vault recovery first: if both the Vault passphrase and the recovery key are lost, the contents cannot be recovered.
The idea is the same, for your documents. A trusted person asks from their own account, you are told, and access opens only if you haven’t cancelled by the end of the waiting time you set. It reaches your ordinary documents only.
Emergency access comes with Family. Personal is free, with no card and no expiry date. Family is €6 a month (€57 a year) and Professional is €12 (€120), per occupied seat, with a 14-day trial. Documents you have already sent are not affected by a plan change.
